Invisible Unicorn

I'm taking a creative non fiction course. The content is depressive and triggering. I feel like I need liquor served neat after my assignments. I'm not alone. One of my classmates mentioned this in our group discussions last week.  I randomly said I would gladly connect over rainbows and unicorns, liquor and cupcakes. My professor replied in solidarity with a challenge from the dictionary. She asked us which of those four was the oldest word. I was absolutely fascinated. I love definitions. They create safe borders for language. The answer was unicorn. Since I was in the dictionary, I read on. There were several adjectives and attributes associated with the word unicorn. The first to catch my eye was all the sexual liberation references. Next was the Scottish monetary value and the Scottish noble messenger. There was a brief mention of Astronomy. Most importantly was the historic biblically reference and descriptions. Unicorns were real animals seen, hunted, and kil...

Consider the Alternatives

Have you ever been trapped by fear, lack of knowledge, or your own ego? Fear is a funny thing.  It only exist as an opinion or perception. I've taught my children under this paradigm. However, I also taught them to ask questions. The most important question we must ask when considering  others is what is the worst thing that could happen? The most important question to ask of ou...

Early Voting

For the last 15 years, I've worked as an election official for the NC Board of Elections. This year was my first year working in early voting. In exchange for the time, we are compensated, however, you have to want to be there. Election day is a 14 hour day, with little exception. You can't leave until the day is done.     If you are a business owner, send some greetings and love to the people volunteering. The are in need of consideration. We get lulls and quiet time where we sit in silence. I always bring a laptop or tablet so I can write or work on a project.   This year, I was being studious and working on my Spanish homework. Of course, making notes for future blog post. I've lived in Rowan county now for 4 years. Today I was sent to an alternate location for early voting. It made me miss my peeps in Charlotte. We had a special bond. I was in precinct 48. It wasn't my home precinct, but I was there every year.  Til this day, I'm connected to a few l...
