Invisible Unicorn

I'm taking a creative non fiction course. The content is depressive and triggering.
I feel like I need liquor served neat after my assignments.
I'm not alone. One of my classmates mentioned this in our group discussions last week.  I randomly said I would gladly connect over rainbows and unicorns, liquor and cupcakes.
My professor replied in solidarity with a challenge from the dictionary.
She asked us which of those four was the oldest word.
I was absolutely fascinated.
I love definitions.
They create safe borders for language.
The answer was unicorn.
Since I was in the dictionary, I read on.
There were several adjectives and attributes associated with the word unicorn.
The first to catch my eye was all the sexual liberation references. Next was the Scottish monetary value and the Scottish noble messenger. There was a brief mention of Astronomy.
Most importantly was the historic biblically reference and descriptions. Unicorns were real animals seen, hunted, and killed.  They were believed to be magical. Their horns were used for medicine. They were described as a rhinoceros.

Over time, they took on a more mythical and mystical reference. They were wild and only visible to virgins.
After reading through these various fascination and clear human preoccupations of unicorns, I could see a common thread.
Me.
I am a invisible unicorn.

I grew up a Pentecostal evangelical. One way to heaven. Only one way of living. It was an iconic Rhino.
I am a taurus. A constellation with many galactic mysteries invisible to the naked eye.
My government maiden name is McIntosh. It  is Scottish.
After divorcing, I redefined what intimacy limitations mean and that pleasures included liberation of thought.  I chose an early career in Finance lending mortgages and now I'm a publisher, nobly heralding the voice of the determined and resilient.

I am the rhinoceros to most. Strong, resiliant, and predictable.
However, only a few have encountered my inner child.
A mystical and magical unicorn.
My unicorn requires safety and free range. The type of environment to fly into rainbows and discover pots of Gold.

Every now and then, a pure soul will show up and discover me, the unicorn. In those rare moments, I am seen and heard. Safe and frolicking in the borders of appreciation.
Life is burdensome. All we ever see are the rhinos. They are important. However, if we pay attention and lean in, we can see the invisible and fabulous in ourselves and others.
