The Tension Toll

I think everyone holds tension differently in the body. Mine concentrates at the base of my neck. It sneaks up on me, and then boom, I have a tension headache complete with a tension knot on the base of my neck. It becomes extraordinarily painful to massage and “knot to” . (see what I did there) 😊 Now, I already know that you are thinking a million things that I SHOULD be doing. You are right.

  • ·        Hydration
  • ·         Exercise
  • ·         Anti-Inflammatory Diets
  • ·         Magnets
  • ·         Clinical Massage
  • ·         Chiropractic Care
  • ·         Acupuncture
  • ·         Heating and Cooling Compresses
  • ·         Alcohol/Pain Killers 😊

You are right, and I do all of these things.  However, at the end of the day, the tried-and-true intimate relationship I have with my HoMedics Massager is unparalleled.

I have a passion for speaking of inanimate things in a personified way. I call it Phil. Phil makes me feel better. It has been a relationship of devotion for almost 25 years. When I was younger, I would say that I had a high pain tolerance. I do. However, as I mature, I am becoming aware that maybe my tolerance is ignorance.  I’m ignoring my thresholds for pain, and allowing negative sensations, emotions, and energies to compile.  The problem is that by the time I’m acknowledging  my ailment, I’m in full blown crisis mode.  From Allergies to needing X rays.  It happens every time. I will hold out until I can’t take it anymore.  I don’t know why ignore the onsets.  I always think that it is fleeting and will pass with time.  The one that happens for me most frequently are my allergies and the tension stored in my muscles. Particularly my neck.

Confessedly, I am persnickety about massaging. It usually involves another person in order for it effectively occur.  I have certain ideals around how its supposed to be done, by whom, and with what force.  Have you ever had someone give you a benevolent massage, and you are like? Thanks, but no thanks? That’s me.  Because I have so many “ideals around massage,” I tend not to lean towards paying for massages.  It is difficult to massage the back of your own neck with pressure. Believe me, I use the corners of walls all the time, inverting on stairs, and neck stretches.

I was in a drug store in the late 90s and met Phil.  I took it home right away and fell in love! The thing that makes Phil special is that it has 2 percussion nodes with a long handle.  This allows me to lay down on the device and angle it into the deep parts of muscle where my neck and shoulders meet with pressure. Phil heats and has variant speeds of vibration. I can use Phil all by myself, and don’t require instructions or directions.  For me, its all about the applied pressure at the pivotal points. Phil can melt away a tension knot in minutes.

I am a chronic allergy sufferer. My favorite use for Phil is to break up the congestion in my sinus cavity and the fluid in my ears. If you suffer from allergies and chronic sinus congestion, you know the power of applying pressure to open your cavities so you can breathe and drain. The 2 nodes always seem to perfectly hit the temples and ears, or the ear and lymph nodes. It is so very comforting.

Phil  is an electronic device, so they don’t last forever.  I’ve replaced Phil several times over the years.  I’ve even tried some other brands, but there is nothing like Phil. Phil can turn a rough day into a tension melted, well rested evening.  Be better than me. Pay attention to your cues and tension indicators.  Relax and Rest yourself. When you are not feeling well, it helps to have comfort. So chill, and get a Phil. https://amzn.to/3KVEkl4

Is there an electronic device that you have a personified relationship with? Tell me in the comments.
