Basic & Boring
Basic and Boring
These words came to me as I was managing a recent crisis. I feel like my life is exciting, fun, and filled with love. However, my path to remembering my moments this way is paved with the simplicity of the ordinary. The older I get, the more I appreciate these words. Life is about mastering, and preserving the basic and boring.
When I was younger I loved to go ALL THE TIME. Every week I visited a new restaurant and saw a new movie. While I still love a great date night, after COVID I eat out alot less. During this time, I deepened my love for cooking. I am a foodie and love fine dining experiences, but with escalating cost and poor service, the whole notion of eating out lacks luster.
I was talking with my child when I coined this phrase; basic and boring. I explained to him that before we can do all the creative and exciting things life offers, we must master the basic and boring things.
I think we all look for ways to escape boredom and expedite success. However there is no elevator to success. We must master the fundamentals. Mastery is repetitive and boring. It is how we learn and how we perfect. When we fail to master what is basic and fundamental, we leave large margins for error and mayhem.
Nothing sustainable in my life ever occurred without mastery of basic and boring. I talk about this ALOT in my book Credit Made Simple. Delayed Gratification is essential to financial discipline. It makes indulgence so much sweeter.
Can we truly appreciate things without contrast? Yes, but the rain is what makes the rainbow magical. July is what makes us long for dead of winter activities. It is the everyday basic and boring routines of life that make our memories stand out. It is our gratitude for our normal lives that give our moments magic. As an adult that loves outdoor activities I have a fond appreciation for overcast weather days. Most people want sunny weather. I love the overcast rainless day because I'm able to maximize productivity. It's like nothing is happening. The moment the skies open up to reveal sun, I burst with instant JOY. One of the hardest things I learned to do was meditate. It is the ultimate gratitude for the consciousness of silence and awareness. At first it can feel like doing nothing. Over time you are controlling mind over matter.
We preserve our centers of pleasure and possibly pain through rituals and traditions. We celebrate and give tribute to things that we identify with or things that hold emotional or physical value to us.
One of my traditions is baking my deceased brother a cake for his birthday. The act holds both pain and pleasure in it.
It is a small way for me to honor the meaning of his life, which holds enormous value to me. I could have found several other ways to do it, but this one I felt most connected to.
I suppose it takes maturity to glorify basic and boring. As we age and consider the alternatives, it creates that rapid contrast of gratitude that we are alive, and get to do the little non exciting things life affords us. As I continue to master my quiet time tucked in my bedroom in silence, I will relish in accomplishment.
As I perfect states of awareness in gratitude, I will recall overcoming anxiety and discontentment.
As I celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and holidays, I'll remember to preserve the relationships that make those moments precious. All that I seek to experience and accomplish is possible because of the beauty in the simplicity of my life. For this and so much more, I give thanks.
